BSES EXPEDITION FUNDRAISING NEWS

Well done to Megan Priestly of S5 as regards fundraising for her BSES expedition. She has now raised over £3000 inc the grant from the Dunblane Primary School Trust. The bulk of her funds have been raised from her Dumyat challenge. Between April and December she climbed Dumyat 100 times from the bottom (eg Menstrie or the University). Her final ascent was on Christmas Day, her 16th birthday. There is a picture - Megan standing, middle- of the final summit on this weblink - http://www.ochilhillrunners.org.uk/infoFiles%5C291211073136.JPG.

Quite a number of these ascents took place in the dark and during foul weather as she had to average 3-4 per week to hit her target. In the process she has got really fit for her expedition (she can now get up and down from Menstrie in about 50 minutes).

Well done to all the above pupils for making such a difference for a very worthy cause.

Congratulations to Dugal Wilson S2,  who has been selected for the RYA Scotland National Junior Sailing Squad. This is a great achievement for him particularly as he is only 13 years old. The training regime will be quite demanding with 10 weekends between now and end of March 2012 where he will be at the National Sailing Centre on Cumbrae, sailing for around 5 to 6 hours day irrespective of the weather. In 2012 he will sail in the 7 Scottish Youth Series weekend racing events, 5 National Racing Weekends Events, the National Championships ( 5 days) and the World Championships ( 5 days). DHS wishes Dugal the best of luck in all these events!

Congratulations go to Fiona Brown 5R2 who has been selected to play football for Scotland U17 Women in the UEFA championships in Austria. They will face Kazakhstan 7/10, Austria 9/10 and Iceland 12/10 with only group winners guaranteed qualifying for the next stage. Last year Iceland reached the semi finals. Fiona also played in this tournament last year losing to France the eventual runners up. We wish her the best of luck!

Nicola McDonald 2S1 whose mother has Multiple Sclerosis wanted to do something to help. She decided to run in the Junior Great Scottish Run on 3rd Sept at Glasgow Green. Despite the rain and a sore ankle she managed to complete the course in under 20 mins and has so far raised over £900 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Well done Nicola!

On the 11th June 2011 Sophie Reid-Kay and Kirsty Holmes - now both S3- completed the Edinburgh Moon Walk. This is a power walking challenge and they completed the half marathon distance (13.1 miles). They followed a rigorous training schedule, training 3 times a week for 12 weeks, walking evenings and weekends. The walk starts at midnight and around 12000 people take part. They were wearing beautifully decorated outfits. The minimum age to participate is 13 years so Sophie and Kirsty were just old enough! They finished in just over 3 hours (an amazing time) and were among the first to cross the line, certainly well ahead of thousands of adult walkers. Kirsty and Sophie together raised around £800 for the Walk the Walk breast cancer charity. A huge thank you to the many teachers and pupils who sponsored them. They are aiming to do 26 miles next year with a new team of friends. Well done to both girls!
