S4, S5 and S6 - HIGHER MATHEMATICS


RATIONALE
The study of Higher Mathematics develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways, as well as offering opportunities for creativity. It is a rich and stimulating subject with the capacity to engage and fascinate learners and has a wide applicability to science, engineering, technology, business, industry and not least to everyday life. Mathematics is an ever expanding body of knowledge, skills, concepts and techniques essential in the efficient handling of information and the solution of problems.

The main course text used is Heinemann Higher Mathematics. There are three units in the course:

COURSE CONTENT
The course is split into 3 units; in those you will study:

UNIT 1  (NAB - Mid October)

  • The Straight line
  • Functions
  • Differentiation
  • Sequences and Recurrence Relations


UNIT 2 (NAB - Mid December)

  • Polynomials
  • Quadratic Theory
  • Integration
  • Calculations in 2 and 3 dimensions
  • Compound Angle formulae
  • The Circle


UNIT 3 (NAB - Late March)

  • Vectors
  • Further differentiation and integration
  • The exponential and logarithmic functions
  • The wave equation

ASSESSMENT
You are also required to pass a NAB in each unit in order to be eligible to sit and gain an award in the final examination. These are set at a minimum competence level and an extension text at A/B level will also be completed at the end of each unit which will give students an opportunity to sit examination level questions.  These can be used for appeals purposes if required by the SQA.

UNIT 1 / 2 Prelim - End of January {Papers 1 & 2}
UNIT 1/2/3 Mini Prelim - End of March {Single Paper Only - Calculator}

The SQA external exam consists of 2 papers - one calculator, one non-calculator and takes place in May of each year.


HOMEWORK
Homework at Higher is a course requirement and a formal marked homework will be set approximately one per outcome.  Regular revision is required throughout the school yaer

PROGRESSION
Students may progress to Advanced Higher Mathematics with an A or B in the course in S6.
