This course aims to help students to learn how to describe, tackle and solve problems which require the use of mathematical knowledge and techniques. Students are encouraged to see Mathematics as arising out of solving problems, often in the real world, and not just as a collection of knowledge, skills and techniques. The aim of the course is to enable students to develop their mathematical skills and understanding to the limit of their capabilities and to equip them for the demands that lie ahead of them in adult life, in employment and study. The courses seek to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of Mathematics, to raise their awareness of its importance and to contribute to the student's overall development.
All pupils studying Mathematics will sit Standard Grade at 2 Levels.

As a result of parental consultation which took place during 2008 Dunblane High School will be preparing pupils for Standard Grade Presentation at the end of S3. Research has indicated that a number of pupils were not progressing or being adequately challenged during S2. Other Scottish schools have implemented this extremely successfully. This means that at the end of S1 all pupils will embark upon their two year Standard Grade course. The considerable advantage of implementing early presentation within the subject is that is allows pupils a full two year period to complete Intermediate and Higher course.
