S1 – S2 ART & DESIGN: CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE
At the heart of the art curriculum lies creativity. A number of other desirable qualities are
developed and encouraged in pupils, all of which enhance and enrich their experiences and sense of wellbeing within the subject. Some of these qualities include independent thought, organisational skills, self reflection, review and improvement and self confidence.
Practical and observational drawing skills are fundamental within the subject and serve as areas on which to build a sound foundation in Art and Design. These skills allow expansion into further creativity, and the confidence with which to do so successfully. Pupils are also required to appreciate works of art and express their opinions within the critical activity aspect of the course.
The course is designed with a number of priorities –
- Providing opportunities to be creative
- Developing skills in art and design to facilitate creative self expression
- Developing an understanding and appreciation of visual culture past and present, with a section specifically on Scottish art
- Developing appreciation of the visual world through perception
This is achieved through a course designed carefully to address these ideas. Pupils take part in a wide range of activities in S1 and S2, starting with basic drawing skills such as line and symmetry (skills which are built on throughout the course), and moving through the other visual elements with exercises in colour theory, texture, pattern and form. The themes through which to teach these elements are flexible and often offer an element of choice for pupils, further encouraging creativity, individuality and enjoyment.
A number of inter-disciplinary initiatives have been incorporated into the course and serve as valuable methods in emphasising the importance of the subject within a wider context.
Learning and teaching strategies are based around the following methods; description of lesson aims; explanation of criteria for success; teacher demonstration; time for individual work; individual support (all pupils will have one to one dialogue with their teacher during each lesson); self evaluation and review and improvement.
