S5 Work Experience
All S5 pupils have recently been issued with information about work experience, which is scheduled to take place for one week beginning Monday 7th November 2011. The information explains how work experience will be organised by way of an interactive and secure real-time booking system, WorkIT- www.workit.info -where pupils are expected to apply online for work placements. Alternatively pupils can organise their own placements by way of submitting to Mrs Hansom (Work Experience Coordinator) a completed self found placement form, by Friday 21st October 2011. Details of the self-found placement should also be completed online.
In addition to the WorkIT website allowing pupils to search, view and request a placement, there is also an online quiz to discover a suitable type of placement as well as the opportunity to gain the eQuip Work Experience Intermediate 1 Unit.

Trends and new technologies
Changing Facebook
Facebook have made some changes to privacy and security settings over the last few months. Some of these are fairly fundamental but to help you get to grips with them they’ve released a new
Security Guide and a page with
information for teens on how to protect their account.
Here’s a few of the changes we think are particularly important
New Photo Tagging Features
If someone tags you in a photo you can now be notified before it’s made public. You can then either approve the tag, decline to be tagged or even ask the individual to take the photo down. We feel this is a great new feature and advise all Facebook users, young and old, to turn it on. More information on this here.
Comment tagging
Facebook users now have the option of adding their location and people they’re with whenever they leave a comment. We recommend that under 18 users don’t share their location on social networking sites. Make sure young people you’re working with have turned off the option to share their location in their Facebook privacy settings.
HTTPS
Facebook have introduced the option of accessing your account via a secure webpage. If you’re not familiar with HTTPS it’s a common security feature on most online shopping and banking sites that helps to prevent accounts from being hacked into on open networks. Facebook users will need to manually switch on this feature by going to
Account – Account Settings – Security – Secure Browsing
We recommend that all Facebook users turn this setting on! However, it’s not foolproof. To use some games and apps you have to turn it off again. It’s important for children and young people to be aware of the implications of this.
Phone hacking
As any young person unlucky enough to have been fraped will tell you, the easiest way to become a hacking victim is by leaving your computer or phone unattended. Setting up a screenlock can help stop embarrassing pranks such as this, but astoundingly young people make it even easier to be hacked when they volunteer their details!
At the CEOP Centre we regularly receive reports of young people who’ve been ‘hacked’ on their phones or their social networks. All too often it turns out they shared their password with their friends. It’s worth reminding children to treat your password like your toothbrush–don’t share it with anyone!
